Sodhi focuses remembering role of pioneers

Chandigarh: Emphasizing on remembering role of pioneers of Punjabi cinema, Punjab Cabinet Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi on Tuesday announced Rs five lakh for North Zone Film and TV Artists’ Association. Sodhi, on the occasion of releasing of a book, titled ‘Punjabi Cinema Da Sachittar Itihaas’ by Mandeep Sidhu chronicling 50 years of Punjabi cinema from 1935-1985, Sodhi said that Punjabi cinema is making waves at the global level nowadays and there is no corner of the world where the connoisseurs of Punjabi cinema cannot be found. Sodhi said that such forums play yeoman’s role in voicing the film industry’s concerns to the Government to ensure that necessary steps be initiated to give fillip to the film actors, as well as technicians apart from being of help to the older actors in their hour of need.

 IMR, MMR improved in Haryana: Vij

Chandigarh: Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij on Tuesday claimed that due to excellent health services being provided in the state, the infant mortality rate has decreased from 41 to 30 and maternal mortality rate has decreased from 127 to 101. This has been made possible due to the efforts of the State Government, he said. Speaking on the issue of deaths of several children in Bihar, Vij said that it is a disease of a specific area, yet the state Health Department has been directed to stay alert of any such illness. Vij said that complaints are being received of corruption in outsourcing and their investigations are being ordered. Apart from this, cases have also been got registered against the contractors at some places.

KU’s Dr Aggarwal appointed CSIR-NISTADS chief

Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed Kurukshetra University’s Department of Chemistry Professor Dr Ranjana Aggarwal as the new Director of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies (CSIR-NISTADS), New Delhi. Dr Aggarwal’s appointment has been made for six-year tenure. The prestigious institute is devoted to a study of various aspects of interaction among science, society and state and exploring continuously the interface between Science, Technology and Society.

Cloudnine Group holds yoga training

Chandigarh: Cloudnine Group of Hospitals-Chandigarh on Tuesday organised a special yoga training session for all expecting couples and their family members. Its Senior Consultant (Obesetriction and Gynaecology) Dr Seema Sharma said that  the Cloudnine has an initiative called ‘Management of Baby Affairs’ which is a two-day certificate course for couples as a part of its my baby programme for where mom and dad are trained together to cope up with challenges on how to care for the newborns.

Seminar for study in Ukraine, Russia on Jun 20

Chandigarh: ‘MBBS Abroad Seminar’ will be held at Hotel Shivalik view, Sector 17, Chandigarh on June 20, and on the spot admission letter to students meeting the criteria will be issued by the University by the delegates. The seminar’s objective is to generate awareness among the student community about MBBS study in Ukraine and Russia, said Ausum Migration Services Director Puneet Rampall adding that assistance will be provided to the students for admission in MBBS programmes in reputed institutions which are approved by Medical Council of India (MCI).

Brahma Kumaris to celebrate int’l yoga day

Mohali: International Organisation of Brahma Kumaris would celebrate with great fanfare the International Yoga Day on June 20 in Sukh Shanti Bhawan, Phase 7, from 5 to 7.30 am. Hundreds of devotees from Mohali, Kharar, Morinda and Kurali are expected to participate. UT Chandigarh Sports Director Tejdeep Singh will be chief guest. Brahma Kumari Prem Lata, Rajyoga Centres, Mohali-Ropar Circle director, will preside over the function.

Higher tax will curb youth’s tobacco initiation

Chandigarh: Public health groups, along with doctors and economists, have urged the members of the GST Council to retain tobacco products as demerit goods at the highest tax rate of 28 percent plus cess under GST. Taxing tobacco products at 28 percent rate will not only discourage its consumption, but will also increase revenue collection for the government, said Citizens Awareness Group chairman Surinder Verma.
