Murder convict dies in Keonjhar jail
Keonjhar: A prisoner serving jail term for murder died in the Keonjhar district jail on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Bipin Nayak, a native of Hisaburu under the Barbil police station. A court had in 2017 sentenced him to undergo 10 years imprisonment in a murder case. He was lodged in the district jail from then. Nayak complained of chest pain and vomiting in the morning, following which he was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital. But doctors declared him dead.
Woman’s throat slit in Dhenkanal
Dhenkanal: A young woman sustained grievous injuries after unidentified miscreant attacked her at Vadaliyasahi under the Kankadahada police station in the district on Wednesday. The victim had gone out of her sister’s house when a miscreant slit her throat with a sharp weapon. She was rescued and rushed to the Kamakhyanagar hospital. Later, she was shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as her condition deteriorated. Police reached the spot and registered a case regarding the incident. The motive of the attack was yet to be ascertained.
Jumbo tramples old woman to death in D’nal
Dhenkanal: An elderly woman was trampled to death by an elephant at a forest under Kankadahada block in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday. Dulana Sahu (65) of Balabhadrapur village under the Telkoi police limits in Keonjhar had gone to the Nageswar forest in Dhenkanal with some other women for collecting mushrooms early in the morning when the elephant attacked her. Dhenkanal Forest Division officials recovered the body.
Guv opens free dialysis centre at Salandi Hosp
Bhadrak: Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal on Wednesday inaugurated a free dialysis centre, named Ramdas Agarwal Memorial Rotary Dialysis Centre at the Salandi Hospital at Motel Chhak here. Bhadrak MLA Sanjib Mallik said the centre would provide free service to the BPL category people. Among others, Culture Minister Jyoti Prakash Panigrahi. MP Manjulata Mandal. Rotary Club president Atish Behera. Rotary ex-governor Ajay Agarwala. Dr Pravash Nayak and Sisir Mishra were present.
Nesco staff demand redressal of grievances
Baripada: The Baripada Nesco employees belonging to the Nesco Power Employees’ Union on Tuesday staged a demonstration and submitted a memorandum on their grievances to the higher authorities. They demanded immediate filling up of vacant posts and recruitment of more employees to provide satisfactory service to the consumers. They also urged the authorities for renovation of the office buildings, provision of water supply and toilet facilities in all 33/11 kV structures. The authorities assured them to look into the grievances.
Maniabandha College celebrates Sanskrit Day
Athagarh: The Maniabandha College celebrated the World Sanskrit Day here on Tuesday. Students chanted Sanskrit slokas and spoke on how the language getting obsolete day by day. Chief guest Pandit Suryanarayan Mishra said that the NASA has declared Sanskrit as the first language in the globe. Prof Duryodhan Baral and Pandit Sankarsan spoke on the need for the protection of the language. College Principal BK Parida presided over the meeting coordinated by Sanskrit Lecturer SN Dash.
Bijaya Panda to represent India at GYPA meet
Narasinghpur: Bijaya Kumar Panda has been selected to represent India at the Global Youth Peace Ambassadors (GYPA) programme 2019 to be held from August 28 to 31 in the Maldives National University. The programme is organised by the Regional Alliance for Fostering Youth (RAFY) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Maldives and various other organisations working with youth for peacekeeping. The programme will be attended by about 200 young people from more than 30 countries.
Blood donation camp held in NSpur
Narasinghpur: The Ama Odisha and the Narasinghpur Yuva Parishad organised a blood donation camp at the DIET premises here on Wednesday. Narasinghpur block Chairman Kishore Chandra Mishra inaugurated the camp in the presence of DIET chairman Arvind Acharya and BDO Prasant Kumar Tarai. A total of 75 units of blood were collected. Members Prof Kulamani Barik, Prof Prafulla Kumar Sahu, ACF Purnachandra Sahu, Range Officer Bibhu Ranjan Ray, Suresh Mohanty and Subrat Kumar Mishra coordinated the camp.

Youth beaten for stealing goats in B’swar
Balaswar: Villagers of Sasang under the Sadar police station on Wednesday roughed up a youth for allegedly stealing goats. Akshay Dalei was tied to an electric pole and thrashed by the mob black and blue before the police took him into custody. A group of six youths had entered the village intending to steal goats when they were spotted by locals. While five of them managed to escape from the village, Dalei was caught.
