The Income Tax department team conducted a survey at the Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University campus at Badshahithaul, Chamba in Tehri district. The survey was conducted on the directions issued by IT commissioner (Exemption) Lucknow, PK Bajaj and joint IT commissioner (Exemption) Ghaziabad, Arkendra Singh. According to sources, the examination of documents during the survey revealed that the institution had not filed any income tax return so far. It has been learnt from sources that in recent years the university had received considerable surplus but neither was any tax paid on this nor was any application submitted for tax exemption on this income. The examination of documents from the university will be continued in the income tax office.
Through this survey conducted on the Sri Dev Suman Uttarakhand University, the Income Tax department has also attempted to send a message to all such educational institutions that do not file income tax returns. Under the Income Tax Act 1961 section 139 (4C) it is compulsory for all educational institutions including those that receive government assistance and those that do not, to file income tax returns. It will be recalled that on assuming charge as the chief commission of income tax (Exemption) PK Gupta had stated that the department is keeping an eye on the institutions that do not file income tax returns as per the provisions of the Act despite having an income.
