Jamshedpur records 283 road mishaps in 2018

Tuesday, 05 February 2019 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The city reported 283 road mishaps in 2018 and during which 140 people lost their lives. Every year about 100 deaths are reported due to road accidents. DTO Dinesh Ranjan revealed these data while launching Road Safety Week at Sakchi on Monday. Traffic DSP Shivendra and DTO Dinesh Ranjan jointly launched a campaign and released banners of awareness campaign.

The DTO said that the Supreme Court is also concerned about the road accidents. No campaign will be successful without the support of the public, he noted. He appreciated initiative of Madhuri fan  Pappu Sardar in educating people in keeping their vehicles locked and following traffic rules.

DSP Shivendra said that everyone must follow the traffic rules. He also lauded Pappu Sardar, who presented a skit based on safety of vehicles.

JNAC brand ambassador Pappu Sardar along with three policemen Anand Mahato, Bal Govind Mundari, Vinay Krishna Hembram were part of the skit. On the occasion, Pappu Sardar said that 200 posters and banners have been made, which have been used to spread awareness. The awareness campaign will run in all the 19 police stations in the city.

Sardar said that this initiative would be a success even if a small percentage of people changed their attitude. People won't obey traffic rules by force. They have to realise the need from within.

“We are creating awareness on dos and don'ts, and want people to follow them. We are trying to usher in a behavioural change. Awareness is an important part in curbing any tragedies, so we are organising programmes to make people aware about road safety," said Sardar.

“The rising cases of road accidents in the city are a matter of great concern. The over-speeding of vehicles is one of the prime reasons for the rising mishap but the absence of traffic police and poor road conditions are equally to be blamed. Though the Road Trans-port Authority from time to time organises Road Safety Week but it is said to have served no purpose as there is no mechanism to control over-speeding of vehicles under city limits,” said a social worker.
