JNUTA calls partial rollback of fee hike cosmetic

Thursday, 14 November 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Days after the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) protested against the proposed hostel fee hike, JNU Executive Council (EC) in a meeting held outside the University campus on Wednesday decided to partially rollback the hike in hostel fees.

A representative of the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA), said, “We will issue a statement when we have clear information. If the reports are to be believed, there is a no rollback but only cosmetic changes have been made.”

The representative also added that they do not consider the Executive Council legitimate since eight members were not present as the administration did not inform them about the change in venue of the meeting.

The Executive Committee came up with the new proposal, which said the rent for a double-seater room which was raised from Rs 10 per month earlier to Rs 300 in the draft has been reduced to Rs 100 a month while the rent for the single-seater room, proposed at Rs 600 from Rs 20 per month earlier, has been reduced to Rs 200 per month.

The committee also proposed a new scheme for economic assistance to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students.

“The newly introduced service charges of Rs 1,700 for sanitation, maintenance, cook, mess helper has not been rolled back nor reduced,” said a student.

“JNU Executive Committee announces major rollback in the hostel fee and other stipulations. Also proposes a scheme for economic assistance to the EWS students. Time to get back to classes,” Human Resource Development (HRD), Secretary, R Subrmanyam tweeted.

Former JNUSU president N Sai Balaji termed the HRD Secretary’s tweet on “major rollback” of fee hike “misleading”.

“The HRD Secretary tweet on “Major Roll Back’ of fee hike is misleading! In order to save their face and create a false narrative, JNU admin in collusion with Modi Government is fooling students and people of this country   #JNUFeeHikeRemains!” Balaji tweeted.

Opposing the proposed hostel manual, the students alleged that the JNU authorities have increased the hostel fees by around Rs 2,000.

“A hike in mess fee and room rent took the increase to Rs 4,000 per student. Students will also need to pay a refundable amount of Rs 12,000 as security deposit, up from Rs 5,500 earlier,” students said.

The simmering discontent among the JNU students community against the university administration over the proposed fee hike took form of a massive protest on Monday with students registering their protest in front of Union HRD Minister on the day of the ‘convocation’.
