Brigadier Basant K. Ponwar, Director, Counter Terrorism and Jungle Warfare College, Kanker laid emphasis on people friendly approach by forces, political will, developing intelligence network, including infiltrating into the ranks and files of Naxal organization, modernization of police forces, increasing aerial surveillance among others to eliminate Naxalism from Chhattisgarh.

He was making his brief presentation on internal security and its challenges during the maiden Intellectuals’ Meet organized at a private hotel in capital city, Raipur on Saturday.

Outlining the measures needed to be taken to deal with internal security         challenges,  Ponwar delved on the insurgency scenario in India and how it was tackled in North East and  Punjab. He also dwelt on the present scenario in Jammu and Kashmir and the problem of Red-terror.

Citing facts and figures, he pointed out that loss of lives of security personnel was drastically reduced after commando training, landmine detection, use of dogs to detect landmines/IEDs were introduced. The IEDs are being found with the help of villagers and forces. Now, surrenders are also taking place.

Brigadier further pointed out how water harvesting was done, covering more than a kilometer, in a college premises. Even Siberian cranes had nested in the premises for the first time, he added.

He called upon to develop tourism sector by providing basic amenities so as to remove the tag of Naxal-affected state from Chhattisgarh.
