A powerful religious sect, Kabir Panth is opposing serving of eggs to the school children in midday meal across the state.

However, another group hit the streets demanding of the government to continue providing eggs to the children.

Panthshri Prakash Muni, the religious head of Kabir Panth having around 35 lakh followers in the state, has set a deadline of July 16 for the government to withdraw its rider to include egg in the midday meal menu.

Failing which he threatened to launch indefinite agitation, including blockade of Raipur-Bilaspur National Highway at Damakheda, the religious town of Kabir Panth with his followers from July 17.

A representation in this regard was handed over to Sub Divisional Magistrate and Station House Officer (SHO), Simga.

Meanwhile, the followers of the sect said that on July 6 at village Bavammohatra a delegation had called on Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and handed over a memorandum demanding to withdraw the order.

At Kabirdham district, the state government to reduce malnutrition and anemic condition of children, has started serving egg and banana with the midday meal.

Kabir Panth followers said, being vegetarian their children unknowingly are consuming egg, affecting their religious sentiments and teachings.

Meanwhile, on Thursday another group of villagers in Kawardha took out a rally in support of providing egg to children in the midday meal.
