Thousands of Kabirpanthis assembled at Damakheda on Tuesday night under the leadership of their Dharmguru Prakash Muni Saheb and started staging a ‘Chakka Jam’ at the national highway there.
The religious sect was protesting the recent government’s decision to serve eggs in mid-day meal to school students to tackle malnutrition. After Baloda Bazar district collector Kartikeya Goyal assured them that their objection would be looked into, Kabirpanthis agreed to postpone the agitation on Wednesday morning.
The protestors earlier disrupted the normal traffic on the national highway between Raipur and Bilaspur near Damakheda and demanded of the government to immediately take back the order of serving eggs to school students under mid-day meal scheme.
BJP MLA from Bhatapara Shivratan Sharma also supported the agitation and was present at the site.
The Kabirpanthis had warned that they would launch an agitation if the government’s order on serving egg was not withdrawn by July 16.
The district collector pacified the agitators assuring that within a couple of days an amicable solution to the contentious issue would be found after some social programme at the chief ministers’ residence.
He also assured that efforts would be made to stop distribution of eggs in schools if the parents didn’t want it.
Kabirpanthis are opposing the distribution of eggs in the mid-day meal saying it is hurting their religious sentiment and their talks with a group of ministers failed recently. The final call into the matter will now be taken by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
