Kejriwal launches 10-week anti-dengue campaign

Monday, 02 September 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

nDelhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday launched special awareness campaign ‘10 Hafte, 10 Baje 10 Minute’ against ‘dengue’ by inspecting his home for stagnant water to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

Delhi Ministers and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, ministers; Gopal Rai, Rajendra Pal Gautam and senior leader Atishi also inspected their houses to check whether there was clean but stagnant water.

“My family and I inspected our home today to make sure there is no stagnant clean water in any part of the house. This is the best way to protect your family from dengue. I am happy to see people across Delhi participate in this campaign.#10Hafte10Baje10Minute,” Kejriwal posted on Twitter.

In his appeal to Delhiites, Kejriwal said creating mass awareness is extremely important for the prevention of  vector borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya.

Sharing the details of the survey he had conducted on Instagram on Saturday, the Chief Minister said “I had asked a question whether people know that dengue spreads only through mosquito breeding in clean water. You will be surprised to know that 35 per cent of the respondents replied that they did not know that dengue is caused by clean stagnant water.

Kejriwal said there is an urgent need to ensure there are no mosquito breeding spots in and around our homes and in the neighbourhood. “Aedes mosquitoes cannot fly long distances and if can ensure that there are no breeding spots for these mosquitoes around us then we are safe from dengue,” he added.

He said the city reported 60 deaths and more than 15,000 cases of dengue in 2015. In 2018, the number came down to 2,798 and only 4 deaths were reported. “We need to reduce it further. We should try and ensure there’s no death due to dengue this year,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that Delhiites have done a remarkable job during last three years by not having allowed dengue and chikungunya to spread and this year Delhi has to bring down this number further down.

All senior party leaders, cabinet ministers and elected representatives carried out the checks at their homes and actively shared photographs and videos on social media platforms.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also inspected his home. In a message to public, he said the residents of Delhi to remove all possible sources of mosquitos’ breeding from their surroundings.

“Sisodia posted pictures of him draining out stagnant water on the micro-blogging site and added, “To save my family from dengue, it’s important that my house does not become a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.”   . From today every Sunday war against dengue… 10 weeks - 10 am — 10 minutes… #10Hafte10Baje10Minute,” Sisodia tweeted in Hindi.

“Responsibility is not just ours but responsibility is also yours. Avoidance is possible only with information and vigilance.#10Hafte10Baje10Minute,” Rajendra Pal Gautam, Minister for Social Welfare, SC & ST tweeted in Hindi.

“I checked my house for any stagnant clean water, to make sure my it’s Dengue-free! I hope you checked your home too #10Hafte10Baje10Minute,” Atishi, member of the political affairs committee of AAP tweeted.

Kejriwal had on Wednesday appealed to all ministers, MLAs and the public to take part in ten week mega-campaign on every Sunday by checking their homes for stagnant water.

The chief minister had said efforts like establishing Mohalla Clinics and fever clinics have led to 80 per cent decrease in dengue and Chikungunya cases in the last four years. “We are trying hard to ensure that this year there will be no deaths due to dengue and chikungunya,” he had said.

The Delhi government on Friday asked all agencies and departments concerned to convert the fight against dengue into a mass movement to ensure that mosquitoes, which spread vector-borne diseases, do not breed in the city.

The campaign will be continuing every Sunday till 15th November.

A total of 75 dengue cases have been reported in the national capital this year,

with 35 of them recorded in August, according to the latest municipal report released earlier this week. At least 131 cases of malaria have also been reported till August 24, the report said.
