Killer elephant wreaks havoc in Palamu

Monday, 18 November 2019 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

A reinforcement team from Bankura in West Bengal will join a six-member team of experts from the neighbouring State in Palamu to shoo away an adult elephant which has killed two persons by now and wreaked havoc in areas under Bishrampur and Nawa Bazar police stations here.

The aggressive tusker has also killed three cattle and destroyed a luxury car in the district so far, forest officials said on Sunday. Chief Conservator of Forests, Mohan Lal said the present team drove away the elephant into far off jungles but it returned.Lal blamed the crowd of people for causing extreme annoyance to this elephant by trying amateur ways of shooing it away. He urged them to avoid any assemblage within 300 to 400 yards radius of the animal.

One of the deceased, Ajay Mishra was singled out and trampled to death on November 14 by the enraged elephant. In a separate incident, the elephant reportedly dragged out 70 year old widow, Maheshwari, from her hut while she was asleep and killed her.

Lal said that he has asked the Deputy Commissioner of Palamu to impose prohibitory orders in the area under section 144 of CrPC. However, the ongoing election is an impediment to this imposition of prohibitory order, he added. Lal said this elephant has robbed villagers and forest officials of their sleep as it comes stealthily and strikes.

He said 4 District Forest Officials – A Sinha, A K Gupta, Rahul Kumar and Ved Prakash—and their 5 each dedicated forest personnel have been put on the job to free the areas under these two police stations from the menace of the rampaging elephant.  Lal added this elephant consumed and destroyed a good harvest of bananas under Pandu police station on Saturday night.
