Kiro represents State at Human Rights Council in Geneva

Former member of Jharkhand Women’s Commission and a social activist from Ranchi, Vasavi Kiro, is attending the United Nations Human Rights Council for Indigenous People conference being held in Geneva from July 15 to July 19. With more than 200 indigenous participants from across the world, there are two from India. Kiro is the only one from Jharkhand while Haresh Pangi is from Himachal Pradesh.

Participating in the 12th session of the council, Kiro affirmed that with the increasing attacks on tribal land and forests, climate change and water crisis is bound to happen.

She also requested the council to ban false cases lodged against tribal rights and social workers and stated that those fighting for Constitutional rights are being termed as treason.

Kiro said “After independence more than 2 crore people have been displaced in India. 80 per cent of these are tribals while the remaining 20 per cent are from other communities. Under the Indigenous India Women Network, Kiro stated that working for tribal rights has become very difficult and women workers are especially targeted.”

Former president of the United Nations Indigenous Peoples Permanent Forum and special reporter Victoria Tauli Corpuz said that mass mobilization of tribals in being attacked throughout the globe. This has adversely affected the whole world where some people are dying due to pollution while at some places there is acute water crisis.

Representatives from USA, Japan, Kenya, Guatemala, Indonesia, Brazil and South Africa were also present among others.
