With an aim to ensure migrant labourers working in state get their votes made, Punjab Labour Department on Wednesday decided to appoint nodal officers in each district.
The decision was taken during a meeting held under the chairmanship of the state Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju and Principal Secretary (Labour) S Venkatrathnam with the Assistant Labour Commissioners.
Raju said that in a democracy, every individual had a defined role and hence it was imperative that each eligible voter had their vote made. “There is a huge number of migrant population in Punjab and most of them had been living here without their voting cards. This makes it essential for them to be included in the democratic system,” he added.
Most of them employed in construction sector, industrial units or at kilns stay here with their families and they have not got their votes made yet, he pointed.
