The doctors of Mahant Indiresh hospital here have claimed to perform first successful surgery using Endo Vascular Aneurysm Repair (AVAR) technique in the State.
Informing about the achievement, the Principal of Shri Guru Ram Rai (SGRR) Institute of Medical and Health Sciences, Dr Anil Kumar Mehta, said that Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a disease of the Aorta in abdomen which leads to swelling in the Aorta which may result into the rupture of Aorta or any part of the tissue, which may lead to excessive bleeding and even death of the patient.
The senior Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgeon, Dr Arvind Makker, Director of Cath Lab Dr Tanuj Bhatia and Interventional Radiologist Dr Prashant Sarda informed the a 70 year old patient was admitted with a complaint of stomach pain for the last two years. “Initial investigations diagnosed that the patient is suffering from Complicated Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm extending into leg arteries disorder. Due to this disease, the Aorta in the abdomen had swollen.
Ordinarily, a big incision is put over the abdomen requiring prolonged anaesthesia, operating time and recovery time. Since the patient was an old man and also a patient of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD), it was risky to put a big incision over patient’s abdomen. Keeping all these facts in consideration, the patient’s operation was done via EVAR technique. This is the very first case in the state of Uttarakhand,’’ The hospital claimed.
Dr Makker said that the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a lifestyle related disorder and it gets progressively worse with uncontrolled blood pressure, excessive cholesterol and use of tobacco.
