With an aim to promote Maithili — Bhojpuri language, Deputy Chief Minister Mansih Sisodia has written to the Union Government to include Bhojpuri in eighth schedule of the Constitution. Promoting another regional language "Maithili", the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government announced that it will soon start the language course in its schools for the students of Class eighth to 12th.
According to an official statement issued by the Delhi Government, "Maithili will be an optional subject in schools and the government will arrange free coaching for the students taking Maithili as optional subject in Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)".
Sisodia who is also the Education minister said "Maithili will be taught as an optional language in Delhi schools from class 8th to class 12th. Students of Delhi would now be able to learn Maithili as an optional subject like Urdu and Punjabi." "Delhi government will also felicitate talent for outstanding contribution to Maithili-Bhojpuri with felicitation amount Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2.5 lakh," he said.
Government is also organizing a five 'Maithili-Bhojpuri festival' to be held in Connaught place in November.
Announcing it, Sisodia further said that the Maithili -Bhojpuri academy will arrange for the free coaching for the students. "There is no font for Maithili presently. Delhi government has taken a major step to have a font for Maithili. The government is in touch with Pune based C-DAC for the same. We will get C-DAC to make Maithili font and then will give it to the users," Sisodia said.
"There was no scheme till now to felicitate those who have contributed richly to the languages - Maithili and Bhojpuri. Delhi Government has decided to felicitate such people from the field of Maithili and Bhojpuri also on the lines of languages like Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi etc. Now, there would be awards for those who work for Maithili - Bhojpuri arts, culture, journalism, theatre etc," he added further.
