Former president of Delhi Congress Ajay Maken said the national Capital has the highest electricity rates per unit in the country but the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government has projected that it is cheapest as compare to other States. Maken said the rate of electricity per unit in Delhi was 7.36 paise in 2013-14 which has reached 8.45 paise per unit by 2019.
"The AAP Government has given Rs 8,532.64 crore subsidy to private power distribution companies in the last six years. Interestingly, the same party in order to upgrade and augment its transmission capacity had promised in its manifesto to give subsidy to Delhi Transco instead of power discoms," he said.
"I have asked the Government through an RTI to provide a complete list of beneficiaries along with list of consumers who has received the subsidy post December 2013," he added.
Meanwhile, AAP senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said the Delhi Government has set an example before the country by its decision of providing 200 units of electricity free every month and the electricity rates in Delhi are the lowest in the country.
Responding to Maken, Singh said the Congress leader was making baseless allegations. "Maken is claiming that per unit electricity in Delhi is at Rs 8.45. Such claim can only be made by a person who is either ill-informed or has not been properly briefed by the BJP," he said, adding that up to 200 units of electricity are free every month in Delhi while in Haryana, consumers have to pay Rs 910 per month for 200 units of electricity, you have to pay Rs 1,400 in Maharashtra, Rs 1,350 in Karnataka, Rs 1,310 in Bihar, Rs 882 in Telangana, Rs 1,321 in West Bengal, Rs 1,200 in Madhya Pradesh, Rs 1,320 in Congress ruled Punjab, Rs 1,588 in Rajasthan.
"Similarly, for 400 units in Delhi, consumers have to pay a monthly bill is Rs 1,075 while it is Rs 1,820 in Haryana, Rs 2,480 in UP, Rs 3,310 in Maharashtra, Rs 2,910 in Karnataka, Rs 2,950 in Bihar, Rs 2,307 in Telangana, Rs 2,946 in West Bengal, Rs 2,430 in Madhya Pradesh, Rs 2,870 in Punjab, and Rs 3,277 in Rajasthan", Singh said.
Singh said that Maken was trying to mislead the people since it was the Congress Government in Delhi, which had increased electricity rates by 100 per cent between 2010 and 2013.
