A dead male bear of about 35 years was recovered by the Forest Department on Sunday from Chalanapal village under Dhobsila panchayat of Nilgiri block. Blood was oozing out from his mouth, raising suspicion that he was beaten to death.

The department while claimed that the aged bear was ailing for quite some time due to ageing factor and died of old age sickness , some locals alleged that he was stone pelted to death.

Nilgiri forest ranger Sukumar Das said, “The male bear was ailing for quite some time and was unable to move. He had a natural death due to aging factor.”

“Of course, after his death some local boys pelted stone at him. The moment we received information, we rushed to the site and seized the body. Postmortem of the body was carried out by a veterinary surgeon and it was ascertained that the death was due to old age sickness. It was buried near Sajanagarh,” he said.

It may be noted Nilgiri while had been a bear infested region of the district, bears do stray into locals areas adjacent to Nilgiri forest range and Kuldhia sanctuary villages, frequently in search of foods.

Some locals while lay snares to trap them to prevent damages to their agriculture fields, other miscreants lay traps to catch them to extract nails and other parts.
