Mau explosion baffles police

Thursday, 17 October 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Investigations into the massive LPG cylinder blast in Mohamadabad area of Mau that claimed 14 lives and left over a dozen people critically injured last Monday, has confused the police as it has surfaced that the cylinder did not explode while the report of Anti-Terrorists Squad (ATS) confirmed that no trace of explosive was found at the site.
Now, the police brass suspect that leakage in the LPG cylinder probably resulted in the explosion. Sources said that regional manager of HPCL, Samir Ekka, who visited Mau to verify how the cylinder exploded, also went to the local police station and found the cylinder recovered from the spot had not exploded.
Widow of Chhotu Vishwakarma, Reeta, whose three daughters were killed in the blast, said in her statement that she was placing the regulator on the cylinder when gas started leaking so she tried to fix it. She said that when she failed, she panicked and rushed outside along with her children.
Reeta further said that later some neighbours went inside but within no time, a massive explosion took place.
Sources said that the HPCL officer, after finding the cylinder intact, met the District Magistrate of Mau and requested him to form a committee of experts so that the cause of the explosion could be ascertained.
Last Monday, a massive blast took place at the house of Chhotu Vishwakarma, who had died around ten years back, in Walidpur village of Mau around 7:30 am. Chhotu’s three daughters — Mona (20), Mamta (18) and Sanjana (15) — died in the blast along with 11 others. While seven people died on the spot, seven others succumbed to injuries during treatment.
The blast triggered the collapse of a two-storeyed building.
Four family members of Kanhaiya Vishwakarma, whose house stood next to Chhotu’s, also died in the blast.
