In a petition filed by Sunday market vendors, the high court division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Kumar Verma has directed the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun and the State Government to submit their reply within three weeks.
The Sunday Market Welfare Association had filed a petition in the high court that they used to set up stalls as part of the weekly Sunday market on the stretch of road between the Parade Ground and Tibetan market in Dehradun. More than 300 vendors had been setting stalls here since 2004 and also paying a monthly rent of Rs 300 to the MCD. In 2004, the district magistrate had allocated this site for the Sunday market but citing a high court order in a PIL, the MCD and state administration had evicted the vendors from this place. The petitioner has stated that the market remains closed and traffic is comparatively less on Sunday.
They set up stalls in the Sunday market only on four days in a month and also clean up the place after packing up. While people are able to buy cheap items, others get a source of income from the Sunday market. Citing these reasons, the association has sought that they be allowed to set up Sunday market at the said place.
