As part of the awareness campaign that is being conducted by Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) against the use of polythene and plastic, mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ on Wednesday started the polythene-plastic donation drive from Paltan Bazaar. This drive will be conducted in all 100 wards under MCD till October 2. The mayor said that the idea is to raise public awareness and provide them with an alternative before imposing penalties on them.
Deputy municipal commissioner Rohitash Sharma said, “We have started this drive in the first 20 wards. Mayor Gama and municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey along with a number of MCD staff went to take polythene and plastic donation from shop owners at Paltan Bazaar. The total collection was of nearly 60 kilogrammes and more than two dozen people took pledge to not use polythene or plastic.”
He further said, “The drive will continue till October 2 in all wards. Local residents are requested to participate in large numbers by donating plastic, polythene and products of polystyrene and also to take pledge with us to desist from using items made from prohibited materials.”
It is important to mention here that municipal commissioner Pandey has earlier stated that MCD will be distributing about 2.5 lakh cloth bags in all 100 wards.
