The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun is all set to conduct a human chain event in the series of activities it is doing for raising awareness on the ban on use of polythene and single use plastic. Municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said that the date has been finalised on November 5.
According to officials the event will be organised in morning for two hours that is 9 AM to 11 AM and Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat along with about one lakh people are expected to be part of this event. For the same purpose MCD has invited representatives from all Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools for a meeting on October 16.
About the human chain event Pandey said, “We are expecting about one lakh people to participate in the event including teachers, students, government employees, merchants, political parties and public in-large. We want it to be a historic moment for Dehradun.”
According to MCD officials, during the meeting on October 16 final plan for the human chain event will be made. Although, Dehradun District Magistrate C Ravishankar is already familiar with the proposed route and event details the meeting will also have officials of the district administration and district police department.
The proposed route for the 50 kilometre long human chain is from Miyanwala Chowk to Mokhampur, then to Rispana, Dharmpur, Araghar, East Canal Raod, Behel Chowk to Rajpur Road and then Mussoorie diversion. On the other end the chain will start from Behel Chowk to Clock tower, Chakrata Road, GMS Road, Balliwala Chowk, Kamla Palace, Niranjanpur Mandi, Patel Nagar, Lal-pull, Saharanpur Chowk, Adhat Bazaar, Prince Chowk, Tehsil Chowk to Darshan Lal Chwok and then again Clock Tower.
It is pertinent to mention here that as part of its efforts to encourage citizens to observe the ban on polythene, the MCD has already distributed about 20,000 cloth bags. According to MCD officials at least 100 cloth bags have been distributed in each ward.
In addition to this when asked about the problem of segregation of waste and about the complaints of foul smell and increased number of pests, which the people living near transfer stations made for dumping garbage before it is transported to the waste management plant at Sheeshambada have been raising repeatedly, municipal commissioner Pandey said MCD had been encouraging and raising awareness about collecting waste in two categories, wet and dry waste.
He further added that nearly 20 to 25 garbage collecting vehicles have already been modified to collect waste in partition from the citizens.
