The members of Delhi University Academic Council (AC) will once again raise the issues of ad-hoc teachers in the upcoming meeting scheduled on Wednesday. The proposed ordinance amendment will have 10
per cent permanent position for the contractual teachers and maternity leave for the ad-hoc teachers.
"The teachers should be appointed on contract only when it is absolutely necessary and when the student teacher ratio does not satisfy the laid down norms. In any case, the number of such appointment should not exceed 10 percent of the total number of faculty positions in the college/university," stated the proposed amendments.
"The AC members will further demand equal pay for the contractual teachers equal like the assistant teachers and allowance of maternity
and child care leave. Till now there is no provision of contractual posts against teaching positions in University ordinances", it said.
Introduction of contractual appointments in teaching positions by Delhi University under pressure from Human Resources Department ministry is highly condemnable and would create feeling of insecurity among the 4500 ad hoc teachers working various colleges of DU.
Starting from ten percent permanent positions as contractual appointments the government may force varsities to gradually increase this percentage and finally appoint only teachers on contractual basis instead of appoint them against the permanent
positions. The teachers are treated as slaves. We are going to strongly oppose this provision of contractual appointments," said Pankaj Garg, an AC member.
