MP Govt proposes bifurcation of Bhopal’s municipal limits

Wednesday, 09 October 2019 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

In a fresh tussle between ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP, the State Government on Monday night proposed bifurcation of Bhopal’s municipal limits.

So far, Kolar Municipality was a separate entity in the Bhopal district. Now, it has been decided to merge Kolar Municipality in Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the BMC would be divided in two parts.

For having two municipal corporations in Bhopal's urban limits, district collector Tarun Pithode late evening on Monday issued an order of the draft proposal and has invited suggestions and objections within a week.

People have been asked to submit their suggestions and objections by October 14. As per the draft proposal, the Bhopal city would be bifurcated in East and West Municipal Corporations. The Eastern Corporation would be having 31 words while the Western Corporation shall have 54 words.

As the BJP has strongly opposed the idea, Law Minister PC Sharma has claimed that this bifurcation would ensure speedy development in the state capital. Sharma claimed that the proposed bifurcation would be helpful in rapid growth of rural areas. Delhi Mumbai and other metro cities already have this system of more than one corporation, contested Sharma.

The law minister went on to claim that small wards would enable better control for the civic bodies and would ensure better amenities for the residents.

Minister further claimed that Chief Minister Kamal Nath has been working on the development agenda and till now with a single Municipal Corporation, the workload was immense and was affecting the growth of the city.  With the two Municipal corporations in existence, the workload would be divided and smaller wards would be convenient for works, he added.

Bhopal Mayor and the senior BJP leader Alok Sharma categorically slammed the move from the Congress government to bifurcate Bhopal city for political gains.

He sought to know from CM Kamal Nath as how he plans to divide the drains--big and small in the city.

Accusing The Congress of always working for divisions, the mayor affirmed the BJP would oppose the move at every possible level.
