On the occasion of Dhanteras and Dhanvantri Diwas, Sasyeshthi Yajna ritual was performed by students of various Ayurvedic colleges and universities of the district. The students were informed about the importance of the day and Yajnas were conducted. Prayers were made to lord Dhanvantri for bestowing health on all.
Speaking on the importance of Dhanteras, Acharya Balkrishna said, “Dhanteras is celebrated on Trayodhashi (13th day as per Hindu lunar calendar) of Kartik month. It is stated in the Skand Purana that Vaidya of Devtas (heavenly physician) Dhanvantri emerged with Kalash (pitcher) containing nectar of immortality (Amrit) after churning of the ocean. There was a fight between the demigods and demons for this nectar of immortality.” It is also said that due to change in season at this time, care is needed to mind one’s food habits.
Ayurveda practitioners advise more of fruit diet during this period to keep vata, pitta, dosha in balance.
This occasion is considered auspicious for buying a new utensil or jewellery item of silver or brass. A tradition of doing ‘Yam Deep Dan’ (lighting lamp for lord Yama) is also prevalent on this day.
An eminent Ayurvedic practitioner VK Agnihotri said, “Daru Haldi, Giloy and Shalpharni (a component of Dashmool) are known to be effective in Dengue fever. Hundreds of patients are getting benefits with these simple herbal concoctions and one may use these at home to keep such viral diseases at bay. Giloy concoction in water also brings down the heat in body thus relaxing the patient.”
Fever occurs only when there is disturbance in ‘Vata’, ‘pitta’ or ‘kapha’ and balancing these with diet rich in nutrients like vitamins and minerals helps regain health, added Agnihotri.
