Negligence of green firm keeps locals suffering

Wednesday, 14 August 2019 | PNS | Gwalior

The residents of more than 13 wards of the city are suffering due to the lethargic and insensitive attitude of the Eco Green Company that is responsible for removing the garbage and keeping the city clean. The locals of these wards are compelled to live in extreme unhygienic conditions. Every one of these thirteen wards is filled with garbage and filth.

The Eco Green Company was awarded the contract in 2017 to keep 66 wards clean at a total cost of Rs 254 crores. The contract is for a period of 21 years. However, it is learnt that the company has not yet began its cleaning work in 13 wards. This is despite the fact that several Municipal Councilors from both BJP and the Congress had brought the matter to the notice of the authorities many times.

The situation is extremely serious for residents and even commuters as garbage gets accumulated and even scattered by stray animals. Along with this the residents are also facing poor sewage disposal problems. Due to the monsoon the drainage systems too are getting clogged, making them a perfect breeding area for deadly mosquitoes. While the Smart City authorities as well as the administration have been claiming that the entire city will be covered under the door to door garbage collection plan the ground reality is that there is no provision for door to door garbage collection in at least half of the wards in the city. With the piling up of garbage in many areas medical experts are cautioning about the outbreak of dengue, malaria and other mosquito borne diseases.

According to reliable sources the Eco Green Company has been asked to submit a report about the cleaning work that has been done so far. The authorities have also decided not to make any further payments till a satisfactory proposal to keep the entire city clean is given by the company.
