The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Superintendent of Police (SP) Jagatsinghpur to submit a report on the murder of nurse Niharika Patra in four weeks by November 24, 2019.
The NHRC issued this direction on a complaint filed by Odisha Soochana Addhikar Abhiyan member Pratap Mohanty. He mentioned that though complaints had been lodged at the Madhupatna police station regarding missing of Niharika Patra both from hospital and family sides, yet the police didn’t act promptly for which the accused lover found sufficient time to kill her, carry her dead body by a motorbike and throw it in the Biluakhai river under the Biridi police station in Jagatsinghpur district.
Due to negligence of police, a family lost an earning member. As a consequence, the family is now facing problems to meet its basic needs, which include medicines for ill- parents, mentioned Mohanty.
Terming the police inaction as a gross violation of human rights, Mohanty urged the NHRC to order for and proper inquiry and take action against the erring police officer. Besides, he urged the commission to direct the Government to provide compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the victim’s family.
