NHRC seeks report from DGP

Monday, 15 April 2019 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a report within eight weeks about the alleged highhandedness by police officials of Angul district.

The NHRC passed the order taking cognisance of a report filed by civil society organisation Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain.

Swain in her petition alleged that around 50 people of a village under the Samal Barriage police station in Angul district were duped by some fraudsters, who promised them to sanction agricultural loans from cooperative banks.    But when the victims went to Samal PS to register a complaint, the Inspector–in-Charge instead of registerering the complaint, threatened them of dire consequences. Swain alleged that the IIC is actively sup[pported by the Angul SP. She prayed the NHRC to take action against the guilty police officials, recover the money of the victims of the fraud and compensate them.
