Night market to rev up life at Ranchi Lake

Friday, 07 June 2019 | Roshan Kumar | Ranchi

The stretch around Bada Talab (Ranchi Lake) will be lined up with vendors and artisans selling artifacts, clothes and snacks from 8 PM to midnight-a step in developing night culture in State Capital. The Ratri Bazar-an after-dark weekend bazaar-will run on Saturday and Sunday. Ranchi’s newly elected parliamentarian, Sanjay Seth during his visit to the lake for inspection of ongoing beautification work directed the Civic Body and officials from Art Culture department to start Ratri Bazar.

In 2017, Seth, who was then chairman of Jharkhand State Khadi and Village Industries Board chairman, had launched the Ratri Bazar in Main Road a concept, which he had got inspiration from Goa, Indore and Bhopal, but after running for few months the Bazar came to end.

Seth during his visit to Bada Talab said, “We have decided to re-start Ratri Bazar once again. The stretch around Ranchi Lake near Park area will be developed as night market. The stretch will be developed as Mumbai famous Chowpati area.”

Seth claimed that with the start of night market it will help in addressing various issues which includes Ranchi Lake getting new life, it will also help in generating self employment to vendors especially those from Mahila Samiti and last the stretch around Ranchi Lake which has become notorious area with occurrence of various criminal activities will help in checking crime graph in the area.

The Ranchi MP in this connection issued necessary directives to Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) Mayor Asha Lakra, officials from State Art Culture department and district administration to carry out preparations for developing night market. Directions have been issued to install street light on the stretch, the Ranchi City SP has been asked to set up a police post in the area so as to check criminal activities in the area.

The Ranchi MP also asked SDO Garima Singh and Ranchi City SP Sujata Veenapani to make the area encroachment free at the same time intensify night patrolling in the Capital so that people returning back to home after late night shopping don’t face any type of inconvenience.

The Ranchi MP, however, was upset with poor beautification work being carried out in Ranchi Lake. The Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company Limited (JUIDCO) is carrying out beautification work of lake, but the agency in name of beautification has dug the mud and dumped it on the banks of lake. According to MP, with the onset of Monsoon the mud which has dumped on lake’s bank will also go to lake creating siltation problem in lake.

The State Government is carrying out beautification work of lake and in this connection Chief Minister Raghubar Das unveiled 33 feet bronze statue of Swami Vivekanand on January 12 on the occasion of his 156th birth anniversary.

Bara Talab, referred to as Ranchi Lake by most, is spread over 52 acre.

It was created by a British agent, Colonel Onsely, in 1842 with the help of prisoners in order to maintain the groundwater level of the city, which is located more than 2,100 feet above sea-level.
