NML collaborates with Germany for metal research

Tuesday, 05 February 2019 | PNS | Jamshedpur

City-based National Metallurgical Laboratory ( NML) has collaborated with Germany for carrying research in metal. As part of the initiative, the Indo-German two-day bilateral workshop on ‘Additive Manufacturing of Metals: Current issues and way forward’ kicked-off in association with Leibniz-Institut für Werkstofforientierte Technologien, Bremen, Germany at CSIR-NML Auditorium.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Indranil Manna, AJC Bose Fellow & Institute Chair Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President, Technology & New Materials Business, Tata Steel Limited, Dr. Indranil Chattoraj, Director, CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur, Dr. V. Uhlenwinkel, Scientist, Leibniz-IWT, Bremen, Germany, Dr. G. Padmanabhan, Director, ARCI, Hyderabad and Dr. V.C. Srivastava, Convener, AMM-2019.

Around 105 delegates are from different parts of Germany as well as India participated and deliberated in two technical sessions today.

While welcoming the gathering, Dr. Indranil Chattoraj said, "In the context of the Industry 4.0, the subject of the workshop has assumed immense importance as additive manufacturing represents a process paradigm in the development of new and intricate products. Additive manufacturing (AM) of metals is an emerging technology to produce engineering components by utilizing advances in allied fields of science and technology. He added the workshop will result in high-potential collaborations across various workgroups, within India and between India and Germany, for advancing additive manufacturing of metals to benefit the end user sectors like aerospace, bio-materials and automotives, and others.

Dr. V. Uhlenwinkel, Scientist, Leibniz-IWT, Bremen, Germany stressed upon recognizing me, new opportunities in additive manufacturing and extensive research on laser alloy development, powder production and post processing.

Chief Guest, Prof. Indranil Manna, AJC Bose Fellow & Institute Chair Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in his address said that the timing and place of this workshop is highly relevant. This workshop will act as a seed for the future development. He stressed upon the development of manufacturing sectors to ensure sustainability. Additive manufacturing is considered as one of the key strategy for creating new opportunities.

Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President, Technology & New Materials Business, Tata Steel Limited opined that 3D printing has now moved from domain of plastic to metal and will become dominated by additive manufacturing atleast for smaller psrts in automotive, aerospace and railways. Dr. V.C. Srivastava organising Secretary, AMM-2019 proposed the vote of thanks and expressed his sincere gratitude to the dignitaries for sparing time and gracing the occasion. He expressed his appreciation to all the members of the organising committee for their untiring effort in making the International workshop a success.

The objective of this bilateral workshop is to bring together the experts from industries, R&D and academic institutions from Germany and India on a common platform for learning, sharing and updating the latest developments in the area of additive manufacturing of metals and alloys. The workshop aims for mutual benefits for both the countries and to create a new horizon for scientific collaboration in the area of additive manufacturing.
