With the model code of conduct in place for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in Delhi on May12, the issuance of licences for fire arms and their possession have been banned in national Capital.

“Committee was formed before the elections dates were announced. The process of scrutinising the list of people who have fire arms has been initiated in every district by the police and license holders of fire arms in Delhi shall be deposited with the jurisdictional police station.

Instructions have been issued by Delhi Police for this purpose,” said Sharat Sinha, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Headquarters.  The ban will be in force till May 27, after the end of vote count on May 23.

However, the State and the Central government departments, public and private sector agencies to which fire arms were issued for security, sportsmen who are part of the National Rifle Association and communities entitled to display weapons by longstanding law and custom, are exempted from the ban. “People who have a criminal track record and have a license of fire arms will have to deposit the weapon,” said the DCP.
