The people of Sanmaheswar gram panchayat of Khariar block in Nuapada district have been demanding irrigation facility through laying of pipelines to connect their farmlands to the canal of the Lower Indra Irrigation Project (LIIP) since long.
Construction of mega pipe irrigation points is now going on, but the demand of the farmers has not been considered. They have now decided to stop the pipe-laying work near the village Sanmaheswar.
"We are going to stop the work near our village to protest against the callousness of the Government," farmers have said. "Our villages are located nearer to the LIIP and most of the farmers in these villages have provided their lands for construction of the canal. However unfortunately, the lands of the farmers are not getting a single drop of water of this irrigation project.
Therefore, we are going to hold this peaceful protest near the worksite at Sanmaheswar village on Monday under the banner of the Anchalika Krushak Sangathana to express our resentment," said Gautam Tandi and Bidura Sabar, members of the Sangathana.
