On the last day of filing nomination papers for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor and members of Standing Committee, councilors of all the three corporations filed their nominations for the posts.
In South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), Sunita Kangra filed papers for the post of the Mayor and Raj Dutt Gehlot for the post of Deputy Mayor. Apart from this, three nominations filed for the membership of Standing Committee Narendra Chawla, Dr Bhupendra Gupta and BK Oberoi. The elections for these posts will be held on Thursday.
The SDMC Mayor Narendra Chawla leader of house Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Deputy Mayor Satya Pal Malik and senior leader of BJP Subhash Arya and a number of councilors were present at the time of filing nominations.
Kangra represents ward number 1 Madipur (reserved) and Dutt represents Kakraula in SDMC. Kangra, a graduate from Delhi University, is a dedicated worker of the saffron party. She held senior responsible positions in the organisation as Secretary, Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha etc.
While highlighting her priorities, Kangra expressed her commitment to work without any discrimination for the development of all parts of SDMC. “I will give priority to swachhata initiatives under “Rashtriya swachhata Abhiyan” promoted by Prime Minister Narender Modi,” she said.
Meanwhile, In North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Avtar Singh (BJP) who represent ward number 83 (Civil Lines) filed nomination for Mayor and Yogesh Verma (BJP) who represent ward number 75 (Ashok Vihar) filed nomination for Deputy Mayor.
For the post of standing committee nominations were also filed by Adesh Kumar Gupta (BJP), Jai Prakash (BJP), Ravinder Bhardwaj (Aam Aadmi Party) and Prerna Singh (Congress).
A senior NMC official said that election for these posts will take place on 29th April in the meeting of the civic body. Since, only one-one nomination has been filed for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor there election to these posts would be unanimous, he said.
While, in East Delhi Municipal Corporation, nominations were filed by Anju Kamal Kant (BJP) for post of mayor, Sanjay Goyal (BJP) for Deputy Mayor and Bipin Bihari Singh (BJP), Ajay Sharma (BJP), Abdul Rahman (Aam Aadmi Party) for members of standing committee.
Earlier, Delhi Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) President Manoj Tiwari nominated the names of three councilors - two women and a sikh hailing from the Dalit community for the mayoral elections in three municipal corporations of the national capital.
Expressing confidence, Delhi BJP general secretary Rajesh Bhatia said Avtar Singh, a mallah Sikh, representing the Civil Lines ward and nominated for the mayoral elections will create history by becoming mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
Bhatia said, “No Dalit Sikh has ever become mayor of Delhi’s civic bodies.”
The Delhi Municipal Corporation Act provides for election of mayor and deputy mayor from among the councillors of the corporations in the first meeting of the House every year.The mayors and deputy mayors get a year-long term in the cities of Union Territories.
