On the back foot over the decision to remove 25,000 home guards from police duty, Director General of Police OP Singh on Tuesday said that these home guards had not been retrenched but had been kept out of duty on temporary basis due to financial crunch.
“It is wrong to say that these 25,000 home guards have been removed... it is just a temporary phase and they have been kept out of their duties,” he told media persons here but refused to make any commitment about when these home guards would be asked to resume their duties.
The home guards are paid Rs 500 on daily basis but recently, the Supreme Court in its order has asked the government to hike their daily honorarium to Rs 672 per day at par with the state police.
“We have no budget for the hiked honorarium of the home guards due to which this decision has been taken. But certainly something will be done soon so that they again resume their duties,” the DGP said while asserting that Home guards were the backbone of police in controlling law and order and they were working at par with the state police.
Sources said that Chief Secretary Rajendra Tewari said in Ayodhya on Tuesday that they planned to sort out the problem and would take some early decision so that the home guards also celebrated Diwali.
