A member of Congress party’s youth wing NSUI, was hacked to death by suspected Maoists while tagging him as a police informer in the insurgency-hit Bijapur district, police said here on Sunday.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Sahdev Samrath (30), a native of Thothapara area of Gudsakal village. The Naxals had attacked him with sharp-edged weapons on Saturday night when he had gone to attend a wedding function in the nearby Kostapara under Bhairamgarh town.

“The deceased had noticed four to five men armed equipped with sharp weapons looking for him after which tried to escape,” a local police officer said.

The assailants chased Samrath and beat him up brutally with sticks and attacked him with axes and knives, killing him on the spot. Samrath was as an auto-rickshaw driver and also a local worker of the Congress party, police added.

It was not clear why he was killed as no pamphlet or notes was recovered from the spot. Efforts to trace the assailants were on and police had registered a case in this connection.

The Congress has strongly condemned the killing and termed it a cowardly attack.
