As the ratio of the women voters is around 50 per cent in India and around per 39 per cent in Uttarakhand, the women voters are poised to play a decisive role in deciding the fortunes of the contenders during the upcoming Lok Sabha election. Keeping in view the importance the women voters enjoy in the electoral theatre of the state, The Pioneer has talked to some women to learn about their leaning and expectations.
A majority of them said that though the government in the past has initiated some measures for the development of the women more needs to be done in the realm.
They sounded one on the point of safety for the women in the state which has been witnessing a spurt in the crimes committed against the women.
Kritika Kakar from Tyagi Road said, “I think a lot is left to be done as far as development of the women is concerned. We are not biased. All segments of the society should progress together. But the development of the women is something I am a bit sensitive about. I for one will cast my vote for the party which will care more for the women.”
Neha Thapa, a resident from Thakurpur, Premnagar said, “During the elections, the political parties and the candidates peddle promises. But the sad fact is that they forget everything once they are elected. We are deeply concerned over the spike being witnessed in the crimes perpetrated against the women in a state like Uttarakhand known for the mighty role of the women in various momentous movements the state has begot. I think safety for us is the paramount issue. I would vote for the party which champions the cause of the women and really cares for our safety.”
Ritika Puri said, “As a woman, I know about the issues which are of utmost importance for us. But unfortunately, they are not being highlighted as much as they should be. I feel sad over the fact that the political parties pontificate and pay lip service to the women empowerment. When it comes to taking steps on the ground they step back. We are still being discriminated against. We are being subjected to atrocities. Gender equality is still an elusive dream. I will first read the manifestos of the parties to learn what they are thinking about us and then I would decide which party to vote for. Our vote cannot be taken for granted.”
Mamta Vaid said, “It is very important that we choose the right candidates. Even when the country is growing in every sector the women are still vegetating here. The women empowerment is just a slogan. We are vulnerable against crimes happening thick and fast. In a state like Uttarakhand, we are not safe. I will vote for the party which, I think, will take stern steps to stem the rot.”
Seema Rawat said, “I believe that the government has initiated some good schemes which have benefited the housewives, the girls from unprivileged section regarding education. However, more is needed. There are still girls begging in the streets, girls remaining confined within houses rather than going out to study. Political parties should focus more on these issues.”
