PCC president fate hinges

Thursday, 18 April 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

The performance of the Congress candidates in the Lok Sabha elections would have a definite bearing on the political fate of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Pritam Singh. Better performance of the party in these crucial elections would raise the stature of PCC President within the party while severe battering like the 2014 Lok Sabha election could even lead to his replacement. Singh who is pitted in a tough electoral battle against Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah of BJP from Tehri Lok Sabha constituency would also be keenly observing the performance of other four candidates as PCC chief as the result of Tehri.

Political observers opine that if Pritam Singh is able to wrest Tehri Lok Sabha which has proved to be a citadel of the erstwhile ruling family of Garhwal then he would emerge stronger in the party. They further point out that in case the congress is able to score over BJP in these elections than the Pritam would become the tallest leader of the party in the state. However a debacle in these polls would give his detractors a big stick to browbeat him and they would demand his replacement from the post of PCC President.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pritam Singh was appointed as PCC chief in May 2017 after the severe drubbing the party faced at the hands of BJP in the assembly elections in the state. In these two years, Singh was able to rejuvenate the party and in the elections of urban local bodies held last year, the congress party performed reasonably well. However in last two years Pritam Singh was not able to select his new team in the PCC.

In these two years, Singh continued to work with the old PCC team that was chosen during the time when Kishore Upadhyay was PCC President. When contacted, Singh said that the Congress party would register victory in all the five Lok Sabha seats in the state. On new PCC, he said that the list is ready and its announcement would be made soon after the election process in the country is over.
