The Commissionerate police on Thursday conducted a surprise raid in the Choudwar Circle Jail here and searched each under-trial prisoner (UTP) and convict in the presence of jail staffs. While no objectionable material was traced from the jail or from any of the inmates; Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty said the raid was conducted following instructions from the Election Commission (EC).
At least six platoons of armed police and as many as eight police inspectors from Cuttack city were part of the raiding team that was headed by the City DCP Akhileswar Singh. Jail staffs heaved a sigh of relief after the raid. The police have earlier conducted several surprise raids in the jail premises when the law and order situations in the city worsened and sized objectionable items like cell phones and sin goods.
Last week, a video went viral on the social media in which an UTP was seen displaying objectionable materials from inside the jail. The UTP, however, died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday.
