49 electors to vote at world's highest polling booth

Shimla: The world’s highest polling station in Tashigang village of Himachal Pradesh’s tribal Lahaul and Spiti district is all set for action on Sunday, ready to receive its 49 registered voters. The Tashigang polling station is situated at a height of 15,256 feet above the sea level, said an EC official. He said the nearby Hikkim polling station used to be the world’s highest polling booth earlier but it was replaced by Tashigang during the 2017 assembly elections due to some technical reasons. The Kaa polling station with the lowest number of just 16 voters in the state is situated in another tribal district of Kinnaur, he added.

EC sent notice to actor Sunny Deol

Chandigarh: The Election Commission on Saturday sent a notice to actor and BJP candidate from Punjab's Gurdaspur Sunny Deol for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. A notice was served for holding a public meeting in Pathankot town after the campaigning came to an end at 5 pm on Friday, an election official said. He said a microphone was used to address the public. The actor-turned-politician is pitted against state Congress President Sunil Jakhar from Gurdaspur, which was represented four times by yesteryear actor Vinod Khanna who died in April 2017 due to cancer. Jakhar won the October 2017 by-election with a margin of 1.92 lakh votes. The by-poll was necessitated after Khanna's death.

Badal, Amarinder families hand in glove: Mann

Chandigarh: Bhagwant Mann, the Aam Aadmi Party Punjab unit chief, said that Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu has put his stamp on the allegations of Sukhbir Badal-Amarinder Singh bonhomie that the AAP has been leveling since the Congress government came to power in the state. Mann, the AAP candidate for the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat, quoted Sidhu as saying both were in league to protect each other's personal and political interests. Even though the people of Punjab were privy to the 'friendly' match between both the families the views expressed by none other than a senior Cabinet Minister in the Amarinder Singh government was significant and endorsed the AAP's allegations, he added.

Amarinder should dismiss Sidhu soon: Majithia

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh should dare dismiss his cabinet colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu or should quit himself immediately as he has failed to tame Sidhu who has struck a discordant note openly on the policies and functioning of the Punjab government, said former Punjab  Minister and senior Shiormani Akal Dal(SAD)leader Bikram Singh Majithia. In parliamentary democracy, the entire council of  ministers should own it and speak in  one voice and those not inclined to support government line should be given marching orders at first instance itself, he added.
