Polls over, temple issue set to take centre stage again

Saturday, 25 May 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party got a clear mandate in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, saints and seers were set to pressurise the Union government to pave way for early construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.

Saints from across the country are expected to converge on Ayodhya in the first week of June to participate in a meeting convened by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas to discuss further action on Ram temple issue. The decision reached at the June 3 meeting will be communicated to saints who will be reaching Ayodhya to celebrate the birthday of Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas chief Mahant Nritya Gopal Das between June 7 and 15. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is also expected to participate in the birthday celebrations.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas has already expressed its displeasure over the mediation by a three-member panel, on apex court initiative, to resolve the vexed Ayodhya title issue. The panel has been asked to submit its report by August 15.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Nyas member Mahant Kamal Nayan Das said, “The issue of Ram temple will be discussed in a meeting on June 3. Whatever is finalised will be shared with other saints on June 15. The Nyas is not in favour of any kind of mediation on the issue. However, the hearing has delayed again as the deadline for mediation has been extended till August 15.”

The Supreme Court had referred the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute for mediation to a three-member panel headed by former Supreme Court judge FM Kalifullah, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and lawyer and mediation expert Sriram Panchu. The panel convened its first meeting in Faizabad on March 13. The deadline for the panel to submit its report has been extended by three months to August 15.

The issue of the Union government’s petition in the Supreme Court, filed on January 29 in which request was made to give back non-disputed 67 acre land around the disputed 2.77 acre land to the original owners, will also be discussed in the meeting.
