Congress general secretary incharge eastern Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Sunday hit out at Yogi Adityanath government citing a media report which said a farmer, who was in prison for not paying his electricity bill, had died.
“The UP’s BJP government raised the power tariff to unaffordable level for the poor and the farmers. The farmers are being tortured by putting them in jail in the name of recovery of electricity bill. The incident happened to a farmer from Budaun, It is condemnable. His family should be compensated and no farmer should be tortured,” she tweeted.
Ever since the last Lok Sabha elections, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has consistently targeted the Yogi Adityanath government on the farmers’ issue. She had earlier criticised the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh on several issues of farmers and questioned the efficacy of farm and loan waiver schemes.
Earlier in July, five farmers committed suicide in as many days in Bundelkhand’s Banda.
“Farmers grow crop, don’t get the price for it. Famine occurs, compensation is not given,” Priyanka had said.
“Farmers in Bundelkhand are getting threats of confiscation every day. What kind of farm policy and loan waiver schemes is this that farmers are left with no option but to commit suicide,” she said.
