Probe sluggish in Subarnapur custodial death

Sunday, 21 July 2019 | PNS | SONEPUR

A family of Birmaharajpur failed to meet the SP of Subarnapur over delay in taking action against police in alleged custodial death of a member.

Lingaraj Amat, a tribal of Birmaharajpur police limits, was detained by police in a case for interrogation on May 29. However, he was found dead and police sent the body to VIMSAR, Burla, by not informing to his family members.

Though the police claimed that Lingaraj jumped from the roof, his kin, however, alleged that he was beaten to death by the police.

In order to pacify the family members of the deceased, the administration had assured that action would be taken against the police officer within seven days if the allegation is proved true. But unfortunately, although it has been already more than 45 days since the incident took place, no action was taken.

The kin of the deceased alleged that the administration was trying to suppress the matter. They also alleged that though they were assured of being given a job and suitable compensation  by SP Debi Prasad Dash and the Birmaharajpur Sub Collector, yet later they have backtracked.

Meanwhile, the locals and family members demanded speedy probe into the matter and action against the accused.
