Tuesday, 15 January 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Accusing the Public Works Department (PWD) for causing dust pollution in the city by failing to lift ‘construction and demolition waste’ (C&D) laying on its roads, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) Mayor Adesh Gupta said due to apathetic attitude of the agency which comes under the Delhi Government the NMC is not able to improve its ranking in ‘Swachhta Sarvekshan’.

Gupta said that PWD has failed to lift malba (C&D) which is causing pollution in the city. Mayor said that he noticed debris lying on roads that come under the PWD. “I have directed the corporation’s officials to get the debris removed from the road and issue challan to PWD,” he said.

The Corporation has already identified 70 sites for dumping of construction (malba) and solid waste.  “All the agencies are supposed to dump C & D waste to these sites. Failing to compliance with the direction, the civic body is free to impose heavy penalty for dumping of malba other than designated sites,” a senior official of the NMC said.  .

“The dumping of construction waste on street is strictly banned under the Delhi Municipal (DMC) Act and is punishable offence. It should not be dumped even in the garbage collection points or Dhalaos or at any public place. Those found violating the rule would have to pay the cost of transporting the construction debris,” the official said. The official further said that out of the 70 locations earmarked for the purpose, 24 are in Rohini zone, 15 in Karol Bagh, 14 in Civil line zone, 10 in Sadar Paharganj, 5 in Narela and 2 in City zone. Similarly, the East Corporation has also identified 15 such location in Trans Yamuna area for the purpose.
