A minor girl, who was raped and set ablaze by a neighbour in Sambhal on November 21, succumbed to her injuries after battling for her life for nine days in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.
On the fateful day, the 16-year-old victim was rescued and rushed to district hospital with 70 per cent burns from where she was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
The police had said that the victim was alone in her home when her neighbour Zeeshan barged in and sexually assaulted her.
The girl’s mother and brother had gone to another village to attend a function at the time of the incident.
Preliminary investigation suggested that the victim had threatened the accused of filing a police complaint after which he doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze.
The accused was later arrested on charges of rape, attempt to murder, trespassing and criminal intimidation under POCSO Act the same day. A day later, on November 22, the accused was produced in a local court where he was remanded to 14-day judicial custody.
