Road accidents up despite zero tolerance for violators

Though the Delhi Traffic Police has adopted ‘zero’ tolerance towards traffic rules violators in 2018 and it resulted the reduction of accidents on roads of Delhi, but it saw a spurt in number of people being killed in 2018 as compared to 2017. Also, there was no reduction in the number of ‘black spots also known as accident prone zones’ in the city. There are total 145 accidents prone spots in Delhi.

According to the data shared by the Delhi Traffic Police, a total of 1604 persons were killed in road accident last year whereas it was 1510 in 2017. The total accident took place in the year 2018 is 6274, out of which were injured 5831 and 130 non-inured. While in 2017, the total accident rate is 6386, out of which 6332 were injured and 87 non-injured.

“Though the number of persons killed in road accident in 2018 increased but there were 501 fewer people injured in road accidents. The traffic police are taking necessary steps to curb the accidents by conducting special drives as well as issuing challans to the road rules violators,” said a senior traffic police official.

Also as per the data, the private vehicles especially charted buses, Three Wheeled Scooter Rickshaws (TSRs), taxis, E-Rickshaw plying on the roads are top reason for the road accidents as well as the frequent violators of road law and order. In 2018, a total of 9,36,293 public transport vehicles have been prosecuted. Out of which, 70,298 were charted buses, 38,751 gramin sewa, 2,96,947 TSRs and 3,13,158 taxis. Further, a total of 1,58,108 e-Rickshaws were prosecuted for violating various traffic road rules.

“Special drives are conducted frequently by the units of Delhi Traffic Police. It has been found that the private vehicles such as auto-rickshaw, taxis, app based cabs, heavy and light good vehicles plying on the roads, are the main reason for accidents as well as traffic congestion in the National Capital. During special drives, vehicles stopping at non designated bus stops, wrong overtaking, not plying in designated bus stops has been prosecuted has been prosecuted for violating the directions of court and other traffic violations,”  said the official.

In 2018, a total of 16,09,458 commercial goods vehicles and 9,36,923 passengers vehicles were prosecuted, the official said adding that prosecution of traffic violating vehicles will continue.
