nIn order to curb eve-teasing incidents in the city, the Gurugram police, in its ‘Romeo Free Drive’ rounded up 52 hoodlums from the Mehrauli-Gurugram road for allegedly misbehaving with women on the wee hours of Saturday.
Out of the 52 arrested, four persons were arrested under the Excise Act and were kept in sector 29 and DLF Phase-2 police stations.
The drive was carried out on Saturday on the direction of the senior police officers under the supervision of ACP (crime) Usha Kundu.
A team of Sector-29, DLF Phase-2, Women police station sector-51 including Station House Officer (SHO’s) were involved in the drive. Also hundreds of police personnel from ‘Durga Shakti Rapid Action Force’ had also joined hands with the police force and rounded up 52 molesters from the mall mile area.
Gurugram police have deployed dozens of policemen along with women police personnel in civil dress outside every mall in wake of increasing crime against women.
“The drive was launched in the wake of the recent increase in incidents of eve-teasing in the city,” said ACP Usha Kundu.
She added that the operation was carried out as working girls were feeling insecure during the night. “The drive continued from 10 pm last night till 1 am. Majority of the miscreants were arrested after pubs closed around 1 am. They were either misbehaving with girls or passing comments on women visitors,” said Subhash Boken spokesperson Gurugram police.
“The accused were produced before the duty Magistrate on Sunday where they released on bail,” Boken said.
An official said that the MG Road area witnessed heavy footfall, especially during weekends, as a number of clubs, pubs, cinema halls and other facilities were situated there. It was observed that anti-social elements often roam around in the area and indulged in molestation or harassment of women.
