Room no 11 of Tata Motors’ Dealers Apprentice Hostel

More than five decades ago, a young architect armed with a degree from Cornell University, New York, came to work in Jamshedpur. He stayed at room number 11 of Tata Motors’ Dealers Apprentice Hostel at Telco. The young architect was none other than one of the most well-known and respected industrialists Ratan Tata.

Tata, who started his career as a trainee at Tata Motors and during his stay in Jamshedpur and during his initial days resided in the Dealer’s apprentice hostel at Room No. 11. In 1962, Tata joined the Tata Group and his first job involved working on the shop floor of its Jamshedpur plant. “During his initial days Tata used to stay in the same room. The room is considered special for each one us,” said an official of Tata Motors.

Tata Motors the then Telco has always been ready to minister the young trainees and in order to look after their basic needs they have made three different hotels for three different department of these trainees.

Namely, the GET Hostel for the Graduate Engineer Trainee, the GE Hostel for the Graduate Engineers and the Dealer’s Apprentice Hostel for the apprentices sent from the dealers end.

These hostels came up in the year 1956 and it in houses those young engineers and trainees who comprises of the cream of engineering talent in India; most of them are extremely qualified with degrees from every part of the world. Ever since these hostels were made it has seen these talents being moulded into stalwarts of this industry.

“These hostels give us a home like feeling and there is nothing more that we can ask for”, says Kaushal from the GET hostel.

As a part of their cultural fest the engineers and trainees organises ‘Wheels’ and ‘Ankuran’ which is a yearly event and people all across the town are invited for this fest. ‘Wheels’ and ‘Ankuran’ have hosted some really good shows by big names in the entertainment industry.

The beauty of all is hostels are still intact with the modern amenities and comfortable living. Every year these hostels witness a crowd of more than 3000.Tata has a long association with the Steel City. He also gave the city two of its most elegant buildings. The buildings are two distinctive ones on Road No. 10, Circuit House (East).

Not many residents of the city know that the architect of these two American prairie-style buildings is none other than the great visionary Tata. The houses he designed are located at 6A Road # 10, CH Area (East).
