The Election Commission on Thursday announced that bypoll to Rajya Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh that fell vacant following the death of former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on August 24, would be held on October 16.
The notification for the bypoll will be issued on Friday and the last date for filing nomination is October 4. Scrutiny of papers will be done on the next day while October 9 will be the last date for withdrawing nominations.
If required, polling will be held on October 16 and the result would be declared the same day.
However, as the Bharatiya Janata Party has majority in the UP Assembly, its candidate will be elected without any problem.
Jaitley’s term in the Rajya Sabha was to end on April 2, 2024.
