SCPCR chairperson inspects GDMC Hospital, pulls up staff

Thursday, 18 April 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

The chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), Usha Negi conducted a surprise inspection of the female wing of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital on Wednesday. In her visit she inspected wards, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the labour ward.

Apparently angry at the arrangements, the SCPCR chairperson gave severe dressing down to the staff members.

In the NICU ward the temper of Negi got flared up when she saw that the milk was being served to the newborn in the plastic utensils.

It is worth mentioning here that during her previous visit to the hospital on March 21, Negi had directed the GDMC hospital authorities to change the plastic utensils in the NICU ward.

To prepare the milk, the hospital staff uses a microwave cooking machine in which the milk and water is warmed in plastic utensils.

During her previous visit, the SCPCR chairperson had said that since plastic cooking wares are not good for health and the milk is being given to newborn babies, the plastic utensils should be changed.

However the hospital authorities apparently paid no heed to the orders of SCPCR.  On the day Negi registered her strong objection to the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital Dr K K Tamta who was present on the occasion.

She asked the reason behind the hospital not following the orders of the SCPCR.

Interestingly Dr Tamta claimed that the new utensils were purchased by the hospital but the staff is not using them.

Later talking to the media persons, Negi said that apart from inspecting the hospital, her objective was to know about the condition of the destitute and mentally challenged woman and her baby who was admitted in the hospital by some civil society members in advanced stage of pregnancy.

This woman had delivered a baby in the hospital. Negi said that the woman and her baby have been discharged from the hospital and sent to the Nari Niketan.

On the issue of delay in arrival of the DNA report which would ascertain the parentage issue of two children (A boy and girl), Negi said that she has questioned the hospital administration on the inordinate delay in arrival of the DNA report.

In this case, two families are staking claim on a baby boy.

The family which is having the baby girl is contacting the SCPCR and asking for the DNA test report.
