South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to make all its wards to adhere to the norms of solid waste management rules in a period of one year. The civic body is following the order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) and has started the process of turning three wards R K Puram, Andrews Ganj and Janakpuri South as model wards within a period of six months.
To facilitate and educate the garbage generators in the process of segregation and management of solid waste as per rules of Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW) — 2016, SDMC Commissioner Dr Puneet Kumar Goel
has instructed all the zonal authorities concerned to initiate a new campaign from this Sunday.
Goel said that the compliance of the rules is essential to reduce burden on sanitary landfill site and make Delhi green and our localities most beautiful, lovable, clean and green. He exhorted all stake holders to join hands with SDMC to achieve the target of a SWM rules compliant city in the country.
“The residents have also been requested to spare two hours from 8 am to 10 am on Sunday to clean nearby gardens and roads. This exercise will go a long way in bringing awareness on the subject and that is also crucial as far as Swachh Bharat initiative is concerned,” the Commissioner said.
The Additional Commissioner Ramesh Verma and Director Department of Environment Maintenance Services (DEMS) Dalip Ramnani stated that directions have already been issued to the field officers for expediting the compliance.
They said that general public is being informed that segregation of municipal solid waste is required to be done at source itself. “
All household, restaurants and all waste generators including bulk generators are requested to take note of this and start segregation at source. All garbage generators will have to pay notified user charges and have to ensure management of MSW failing which notified penalty will be charged,” they added.
“It is a formidable challenge which will be done with constructive contribution of the garbage generators, concessionaires, NGOs and RWAs,” Verma said.
It may be noted that NGT in its order dated January 3, directed the civic body to turn its three wards as model wards for implementation of the SWM Rules 2016 within six months.
Subsequently the Chief Secretary of the Delhi Government had directed the civic body to move further in this direction.
