Special fee on IMFL, beer for ‘gaushalas’

Saturday, 19 January 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Facing the heat over stray cattle menace, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a special fee on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and beer for funding ‘gaushalas’ (cow shelters) for the stray cattle in the state.

This decision was taken in the state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath here on Friday.

Briefing media persons here, state government spokesperson and Energy Minister Shrikant Sharma said the government would collect an additional revenue of Rs 165 crore annually by imposing special fee on excise.

“While an additional fee of Re 0.50 to Rs 2 will be imposed per bottle on purchase of beer and IMFL, the special fee will be Rs 10 per bottle for liquor consumed in bars. The money generated will be used to fund construction of shelters for stray cows in the state,” he said.

Earlier, the government had imposed 2 per cent cess on liquor.

The new tax would be over and above the cess, the spokesman said.

In order to promote artisans under the One District, One Product (ODOP) scheme, the state government announced a distribution and promotion policy. The policy aims at funding the artisans for participating in national and international handicraft fairs.

As per the policy, an artisan will get Rs 50,000 or 75 per cent of the stall booking amount, whichever is less, for participating in artisans’ fair organised within the state. They will also get freight charge of Rs 7,500 for transporting their goods.

“If the artisan wishes to attend a fair outside Uttar Pradesh, he will get 75 per cent of the stall charge or Rs 50,000, but the freight charge will be Rs 15,000. They will also get reimbursement for 3AC rail fare or AC bus fare,” the spokesman said.

For participating in international trade fairs, the artisans will get Rs 2 lakh or 75 per cent of the stall booking amount besides 75 per cent of the transportation cost and Rs 75,000 or 75 per cent of the air fare, whichever is less.
