SPIC MACAY Convention to be held from Aug 16

The three day Uttarkhand State convention by Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) will be held at the Unison World School from August 16 to 18. The Unison World School principal Divya Dwivedi said this while addressing the media the Press Club here on Tuesday.

She informed that the three-day long programme will witness participation and performance by various celebrated artists. The founder of SPIC MACAY, Kiran Seth will be the chief guest on the occasion. The highlight of the convention is performances by renowned artists such as folk singer Basanti Bisht, Rajit Kapoor, Hindustani vocalists Pundit Rajan and Sajan Mishra, puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee, Bharatnatyam dancer Mallika Sarabhai, Kathak dancer Rajendra Gangani, Sitarist Shahid Parvez, Carnatic vocalist, Gurucharan, flautist Ronu Majumdar, Gurubani singer Alankar Singh and vocalist Tulika Ghosh. “Students participating in the residential intensive training programmes will be trained by well-known artists from all over the country, such as Tulika Ghosh and Vijaya Godbole in Hindustani vocals, Deepti Gupta and Ravi Prakash in Kathak,  Jai Shankar Misra in Tabla, Ambika Devi in Madhubani painting, Kamaldeep Singh in clay modelling, Madhuri Barthwal in Garhwali folk, Tanya Saxena in Bharatnatyam, Shalakh Rai in  Odissi, Alankar Singh in Gurubani, Sri Tarapad Rajak in Chhau and Dadi Pudumjee in puppetry among others,” said Diwedi.

Speaking about the three day programme, Lalit Mohan said, “The event will be divided into two parts-- concert performances and residential intensive training programme.  Along with private schools, there will be wide participation from Government schools as well.

During the programme, the participants will get time to spend time with ‘Gurus’ and learn various art forms from them.” Throwing light on the convention, Radha Chatterjee said, “The core purpose behind hosting this programme is to make every child experience the inspiration and mysticism embodied in Indian and world heritage. Such conventions are a celebration of the varied heritage of our nation.”  Vidya Vasan further added, “Over 1,000 students will be taking part in the concert performances, whereas over 250 students will participate in the residential intensive training programmes. In the intensive training programmes, top artists from will impart training to the students.”

The schools which shall be participating in the three day long convention include Marshall School, Brightlands School, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Mount Fort School, The Doon School, Welham Girls’ School, Shigally Hill, Saint Jude’s School and Summer Valley School among others.
